Doctoring Beauty. Beauty and Medicine in the Middle Ages and Early Modern Europe

Beauty cultures have a remarkable history as the practices, texts, and artefacts involved have circulated and transformed through time and space. The collective lecture traces the aesthetic praxeology of European beauty cultures from antiquity to the Middle Ages to the Early Modern period between medicine, pharmacology, and the arts.

Christina Antenhofer (Salzburg), Jill Burke (Edinburgh), Montserrat Cabré (Cantabria), Irene Calà (Munich), Erin Griffey (Auckland), Sabrina Jocher (Salzburg), Timothy McCall (Villanova), Romana Sammern (Salzburg), Katharina Seidl (Innsbruck), and Andreas Winkler (Innsbruck) will present results from the itinerant symposium “Medicine, Beauty and the Body: Materials, Texts and Artifacts“ in Innsbruck, Schloss Ambras, Salzburg, and Vienna.
