Who Cares for Music? Observations from an Ethnographic Study of Music Therapy for People Nearing the End of Life in Care Homes: Gary Ansdell (University of Exeter | Nordoff Robbins Music Therapy Centre London, United Kingdom | University of Limerick, Ireland)

This talk will report on emerging results from a major UK Arts and Humanities Research Council funded project called Care for Music: an ethnography of muisic in late life and end of life settings – a collaboration between Exeter University UK and the Grieg Academy, University of Bergen, Norway [careformusic.org]. This detailed ethnography has taken an unusual stance towards the standard perspective of researching ‚music in or for care‘, exploring instead the nature of mutual care for music experienced and exchanged between residents, care staff, family and friends in care homes. The project is exploring how shared and distributed musical care can in turn allow other kinds of everyday caring to happen in particular and helpful ways for people nearing the end of their lives. New methodological and theoretical perspectives have evolved through this research, including how disruptions in practice during the Covid pandemic have provided an ‘accidental experiment’ that has helped better identify certain key aspects of caring for music.

Gary Ansdell is an experienced music therapist, trainer and researcher. He is currently an honorary Professor at Exeter University, Adjunct Professor in Music Therapy at the University of Limerick, and an Associate of Nordoff Robbins UK, where he is Convenor of the MPhil/PhD programme. He lives in Norwich, UK, where he is a deputy singer in the cathedral choir.
