Beschreibung

Usually, knowledge serves as a means of economic production and is treated as a commodity. Its relevance emerges in large(r) national or global networks as scientific, political, juridical and cultural knowledge. This kind of knowledge is supposed to be centralized knowledge dedicated to informing the economic elite. The underlying spatial context of knowledge production and referencing is given with the territory that offers op-portunities for comparability. At this level of utilization, knowledge could be described and explained as “cen-tralized”, “commodified”, and “territorialized”.
On the other hand, local social-community knowledge approaches the counterparts of de-centralization, de-commodification, and de-territorialization to enrich local-to-regional attempts at sustainable, successful eco-logical and economic activities at the small-scale level. The paper exemplifies this strategy of commoning by illustrating two empirical case studies from Northern Sweden. One case study introduces efforts in creating cooperative businesses, such as a hotel, a cheese-producing company or a ground school. The other case study offers insights into local public eHealth initiatives of remote and small villages to strengthen demographic stability and infrastructural survival.
