The “GMES and Africa” initiative establishes a long term partnership between European and African stakeholders, committed to the Lisbon Declaration, to work together on development and implementation of Earth Observation (EO) applications based on African requirements. The process is implemented in the wide context of the Africa-EU partnership to contribute for the sustainable development and increment of scientific cooperation. “GMES and Africa” strengthens Africa’s capacity and ownership in EO activities and acknowledges the importance of past and present programmes recognising the need to coordinate actions to avoid duplication, increase synergies and enhance complementarities.

The “GMES and Africa” initiative provides the framework for a long-term vision on cooperation between Europe and Africa as the EO reference system directly operated by African as the key tool for resources, environment and security management at continental, regional and national level. This project is expected to be an important supporting instrument facilitating the necessary dialogue to assure the objectives are achieved through improved coordination, adequate information flow and dissemination.
