Wider research context / theoretical framework
The aim of this research project is to examine various forms of interaction between art and literature using the example of the artistic work of Cy Twombly and his numerous references to world literature from the 18th to the 21st century. The research project is positioned between German and comparative literary studies as well as art and cultural studies.
Hypotheses / research questions + Approach / methods
The plan is to begin by analysing the inter-media network between art and literature in the mode of close reading/viewing, and compare them genetically with one another so that their points of contact, borderlines and border crossings can be determined. An exact text-image analysis reveals their formal and content-related overlaps and transformations, whereby the focus will be on the exact knowledge of the pre-texts, the literary works and their historical development. In this context, the terms of the literary canon, world literature and its translation, international and transnational literary historiography will be subjected to critical examination, as will the question of the participation of art in this literary historiography. Twombly’s method of quotation will be understood – within the framework of Lachmann’s post-structuralist theory of intertextuality – as an act of cultural remembrance. The special importance of the reader will be highlighted, since in his dialogue with the text the author/artist becomes one.
In the second part of the project, the results obtained in the first part of the thesis will be analysed in the context of the theoretical approaches to the linguistic (Rorty), iconic (Boehm), and pictorial turns (Mitchell), approaches that contrast the efficacy of linguistic culture with the efficacy of visual culture. Barthes describes Twombly’s work as a work of literature in which language, writing, narrativity, and successiveness are significant. At the same time, given that Twombly’s pictures also function as autonomous media, their linearity, colour, simultaneity, performativity, layering, and iconographic elements, to name a few examples, will need to be examined.
The third part of the research project uses typological comparisons to work out exemplary points of transmedial contact with the poetics of Rome/Italy as well as the poetics of plants as elaborated by Twombly, Bachmann, Rilke and Goethe. These well-known topoi will be investigated to determine to what extent they are stereotypical or innovative in nature, taking into account memory studies (palimpsest/memory apparatus; Freud), theories of cultural memory (J. and A. Assmann), and Wittgenstein’s philosophy of language.
