Beschreibung
When mitigation is incomplete, societies and individuals have to invest in measures to adapt to climate change. Yet, adaptation measures are likely to be imperfect or might turn out to be impossible to implement. In these cases, there will be damages suffered, in particular by populations that are most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change and lack the means for a quick recovery from disasters. Hence, the more harm we fail to avoid through greenhouse gas reduction and adaptation, the more harm we will have to address in the aftermath of climate change-related events. Yet, note that adaptation in particular has its limits: A certain amount of residual damages from climate change can simply not be avoided. Within the international climate policy negotiations, such unavoidable damages have been acknowledged by use of the term Loss and Damage (L&D) that is “beyond adaptation”. This project strives to investigate the preferences vis-à-vis such loss and damage policies: What kind of policies do citizens find just and which one do they oppose?
