Advanced materials and chemicals are keys elements to support Europeans’ wellbeing and EU economy. In addition, the continuous development of new molecules is key for Europe to maintain its scientific excellence. During the last decade, the focus was primarily to develop new molecules and materials to enhance properties or increase performance. However, Europe has embarked on a transition towards climate neutrality. Several initiatives have been established to support this ambition such as the EU Industrial Strategy, Green Deal Industrial Plan, and the Zero Pollution vision for 2050. Circularity is a major aspect of the road towards climate neutrality. Increasing the recycling potential of the materials and chemicals developed will be a cornerstone. Another pathway identified is the development of safer and more sustainable molecules/products by design. The PLANETS project will develop and demonstrate at TRL 7 safer and more sustainable alternatives for 3 case studies: surfactants, flame retardants, and plasticizers.
