Abstract

WE (Fotedar et al.) established a new species, viz., Euplotes qatarensis, and described its morphology, ontogenesis, and phylogenetic relationships in this electronic-only journal. As this work does not contain ZooBank registration, it is not published in the sense of nomenclature (ICZN, Articles 8.5, 9.11), that is, it is not a work in which a name or nomenclatural act can be made available (ICZN, Article 11.1). However, such work very likely remains available as a source of published descriptions and illustrations, similar to a suppressed work (ICZN, Article 8.7.1). To become available, every new name published after 1930 has to be accompanied by a description or definition that states in words characters that are purported to differentiate the taxon (ICZN, Article 13.1.1) or be accompanied by a bibliographic reference to such a published statement (ICZN, Article 13.1.2). Furthermore, it must contain ZooBank registration when published in an electronic-only journal (ICZN). The present work is to ensure that the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature criteria for the availability of new names in electronic-only journals are satisfied for both taxa described below (ICZN). Adoral zone occupies 2/3 of cell length, composed of about 35 membranelles. Invariably ten frontoventral, five transverse, two distantly spaced marginal, and two caudal cirri and ten dorsolateral kineties with about ten dikinetids in mid-dorsal row. Macronucleus C- to horseshoe-shaped. Dorsal silverline system of double type. Type locality. Khor Al-Adaid Lagoon, Qatar, 24°38′6.86″N; 51°21′24.03″E (further details, see chapter materials and methods in Fotedar et al, p. 578). Type material. The type slide (registration no. NHMUK 2016.1.6.1) and a paratype slide (registration no. NHMUK 2016.1.6.2) with protargol- and silver nitrate-impregnated specimens, respectively, are deposited in the slide collection of the Natural History Museum (NHM), London. The relevant cells are marked by black ink circles on the coverslip. Further hapantotype slides are deposited in the Laboratory of Protozoology, OUC, China (No. JJM2015040301) and in the Microbial Culture Collection Qatar. The SSU rRNA sequence is deposited at GenBank, accession number KU555390. Etymology. The specific epithet refers to Qatar, the country in which the species has been discovered.
