Abstract
This contribution provides an introduction to the connection between history education and ethnography. To this end, not only the role of ethnography in history education in the German-speaking countries will be discussed, but also the reception of anthropology and ethnography in historical studies. By presenting a broad range of ethnographic studies dealing with historical thinking, historical learning and historical culture, the attempt is made to illustrate potential empirical approaches for further research. Furthermore, a selection of ethnographic key-concepts will be presented for their use in domain-specific research contexts of history education.
