Description
In the last 15 years, crises have been plentiful in the European Union (EU). This constant state of polycrisis is connected to an underlying crisis of political representation in the EU and its member states. This crisis manifests itself in dwindling linkages between parties and voters, changing lines of political conflict along a multidimensional polycleavage and a growing tension between responsibility and responsiveness. This workshop explores new frontiers in researching representative democracy in the EU and its crises by bringing together leading international scholars in political theory, EU studies, representation and party research as well as EU practitioners. We discuss conceptual and theoretical innovations to reframe political representation in the multilevel system of EU governance beyond the supranational – intergovernmental divide. Participants debate innovative avenues for future research on parties, parliaments and representation in an EU under strain. This means understanding representation as a multidimensional and multilevel phenomenon with diverse methodological approaches. Speakers will give short impulse presentations followed by an open discussion on how the different (sub-)disciplines can work together to make representative democracy work in the EU. Instead of the usual - more restricted - conference format of papers with discussants, the focus is on interactive brainstorming and exchange of ideas on the future of interdisciplinary research on various theoretical, methodological and normative aspects of representative democracy in the EU.Period | 15 Jun 2023 → 16 Jun 2023 |
