Description
The aim of the research project is to edit and translate Eliyō of Harran’s treatise on the Eucharistic mysticism. The text is in Syriac and has not been edited, translated or studied yet.
The treatise on the Eucharistic theology is found in the British Library (Add. 14726) was written by Eliyō of Ḥarran the bishop of Salamiah, addressed to a monk called Dionysius Urhoyō (Edessene) in the monastery of Qennešrē around the eighth century. According to Ephrem Barsoum, Dionysius Urhoyō was Dionysus of Tell Maḥre, who became later the patriarch of the Syriac Orthodox Church of Antioch in 818 and died 845. It seems the main point of this treatise is to provide clarification about the phrase “we break the heavenly bread”. The treatise contains magnificent aspects on the eucharistic theology and terminology. It is a unique masterpiece of interpretation, in terms of its range and style, which differ to other Syriac eucharistic commentaries. The author deeply engages himself with the theological understanding of the Eucharist and its connotations and he divides his discourse into four chapters and touches the following aspects: The transformation of the Eucharistic elements, refutation of the phrase “we break the heavenly bread,” and the spiritual benefits of participating in the Mysteries. Hence, the edition, translation and publication of the text will contribute to the studies on the eucharistic mysticism in the Syriac tradition.
Under the supervision of Priv.-Doz. Dr. Aho Shemunkasho, Dr. Saliba Er will work on the edition and translation of the treatise. He is a native Syriac-Aramaic speaker from Turabdin, Turkey. He is a Syriac Orthodox monk priest, was teaching classes for the ULG MA in Syriac Theology since 2018, hold a Phd from the University in Vienna (2020), MA from the University of Cardiff (2012), BA from the University of Chichester, UK (2011).
