Description

The mammalian immune system acts as a complex surveillance system ensuring to distinguish between self and non-self, and between harmless and dangerous events approaching from outside or inside of the organism. Moreover, it interacts with growth, differentiation and death of cells and tissues, and thus maintains the homeostasis and the integrity of our body. The doctoral college will focus on two pathologies of the immune system, i.e. the overwhelming allergic immune response and the inefficient immune response against certain tumors. Both diseases are a growing concern and there is an urgent medical need to elucidate the underlying mechanisms for the development of new therapies. Unraveling the cellular and molecular immunological mechanisms and pathways will enable to develop rational and molecule-based strategies for the treatment of these diseases. The goal of the doctoral college is (1) to establish an international PhD program with the topic “Immunity in Cancer and Allergy” at the Faculty of Natural Sciences of the University of Salzburg, (2) to attract and select excellent graduate students from all over the world, (3) to provide an intellectually stimulating environment, an excellent instrumental and methodological infrastructure and ambitious scientific projects, and (4) to prepare for a successful career in basic as well as translational and applied science. ICA will offer training opportunities for students within established research groups focusing on medically-oriented basic and translational research. Their expertise covers immunological, biochemical, molecular biological, cell biological, structural biological, genetic and genomic techniques. The overall aim of the DK is to create an interactive environment, which will allow scientific questions and problems to be addressed in an interdisciplinary network rather than by individual researchers. The broad range of scientific, technological and methodological expertise paired with common and overlapping scientific interests of ICA members will build a solid basis for challenging scientific problems that are beyond the capability of the individual groups. This will both, further strengthen the existing network and expand the horizon of each individual research group, as well as lead to a transfer of know-how and methods necessary for tackling complex scientific questions in the field of allergy and tumor research. Building a research communication network, providing a structure for joint activities and interlinking already ongoing research projects represents an important added value of the DK and will help to break new scientific grounds and to attract talented and highly motivated PhD candidates.
