Urban Nature and Urban Green Spaces, Educational Module

Project Details

Description

Urban Nature and Urban Green Spaces becomes a key subject of urban
development in developing countries as in developed countries. The
exchange of knowledge and experiences, the drivers, demands, social,
environmental, economic and planning aspects is an urgent demand for
research, planning, and decision making. The subject has to be included into
education of different disciplines and interdisciplinary too. With a workshop of
invited graduate and doctoral students of three Asian universities in Bangkok
this subject will be targeted in 2020/21, prepared by workshop of different
urban ecosystem subjects already in 2016 and 2017. All three Thai partners
are working on the subject in research and education and want to enlarge
education and research on it by using cooperative activities, supported by
ASEA-UNINET.
Urban Nature and Urban Green Spaces is part of the general management of
urban systems, and will become even more important in this process and a
key challenge for Asian and European cities. The lack of knowledge and
management abilities related to urban nature and green because of too little
understanding of the complex interactions between the natural, built and
socio-economic systems has been identified as hindering of sustainable urban
development. This needs further actions in interdisciplinary educating. The
division Urban and Landscape Ecology of the Department of Geography and
Geology at the University of Salzburg aims to join efforts in the enhancement
of higher education on urban environmental planning and management
challenges together with the colleagues from King Mongkut's University of
Technology, Chulalongkorn University, Social Research /CUSRI Institute, and
the Kasetsart University, Faculty of Architecture, together with the Thai
Planners Association.
The overall objectives of this application are to:
- Join efforts in order to enhance higher education on urban environmental
management and planning by identifying future and practice-oriented aspects
of teaching and exploring possibilities of standardizing courses and credit
schemes;
- To enhance and prepare for joint educational activities, collaborative
curricula, lecturer and student exchange;
- To improve and consolidate the existing academic network between Asian
and European higher education institutions.
The specific objectives of the particular activities (short courses) proposed are
to:
- Develop an understanding of the city as complex urban ecosystem and
exchange according experiences from Asian and European perspective,
incorporating interdisciplinary aspects represented by the involved partners;
- To exchange innovative and integrated approaches for urban ecosystem
management applicable to practical needs – both of relevance to Asia and
Europe.
The Educational Module is supposed to cover the following aspects:
This Educational Module will include aspects of analysis, assessment,
management process, dynamics and related socio-economic, ecological and
planning of Urban Nature and Urban Green Spaces and their inter-linkage
with the urban environment, especially for planners.
