Project Details

Description

The project inquires into certain interferences with texts of the German-speaking courts of the High and Late Middle Ages and the aesthetics emerging there − without postulating in advance that these aesthetics have to be fundamentally different from our modern ones. The texts analysed are Middle High German translations and/or adaptations of the mostly Latin Afterlife
Journeys (mainly the Visio Sancti Pauli, the Visio Tnugdali and the Visio Lazari) and surrounding texts that mirror certain aspects of these Afterlife Journeys. The theoretical approach works with a systematic definition of ‘virtuality’, combining philosophical definitions with pragmatic approaches of game studies, thus emphasizing a certain mode of reception that included the Afterlife Journey in a system of courtly literary entertainment.
