A Plea for Modelling Geographical Spaces – Because They Do Not Exist As Such

Research output: Contribution to conferencePaperpeer-review

The aim of this paper is to explain the nature of geographical spaces as simulta-neously material, relational and semantic. Given this ontological characteristic, it is stated that such spaces do not exist – as such – materially or empirically. In-stead, they are transformed and transferred as elements of communication in so-cial systems. Models play a central role in the process of transformation and transfer as they are capable of creating geographical spaces in a comprehensive albeit non-holistic way.
