Abstract

INTERCOM invites the users to adopt the role of a person travelling to Austria, Bulgaria, Greece or Portugal and to discover to what extent they are able to understand and do a lot of things in the languages of these countries (ordering and buying clothes, finding a place to live, finding your way, preparing a trip, understanding and preparing a recipe). INTERCOM develops a methodology of Intercomprehension which is founded on the use of strategies that rely on non-linguistic aspects of receptive competence. Several interactive activities, which are based on this particular methodology, have been developed for online & receptive learning of the following four languages: a Germanic language, German, a Romance language, Portuguese a Slavic language, Bulgarian, Greek. By situating Intercomprehension beyond the language families and stressing the non-linguistic aspects, the project brings a new dimension to the notion of Intercomprehension.
