Abstract

The development of the AfD and the FPÖ is characterized by recurring internal conflicts. In both cases, these have always led to the victory of the more radical actors, which so far has not had a negative impact on the success of the parties in elections.
Their positions on migration and the EU and the extent of populism hardly differ at all, and both parties take the most radical position within their party system. Overall, however, the AfD is somewhat more to the right culturally and quite clearly to the right economically than the FPÖ.
Both parties show an open affinity for right-wing authoritarian governments of other states and there is a clear overlap in personnel with the far-right milieu. In a direct comparison, however, the latter are more pronounced in the AfD.
Voters of both parties share a critical attitude towards migration and European integration, have fewer concerns about climate change and a higher affinity for populism. By contrast, dissatisfaction with the economic situation is not significantly higher in either case than in the rest of the electorate, and only AfD voters express greater dissatisfaction with democracy and a stronger desire for a strong “leader”.
